On Hmong American Day (May 14), we’re taking a look at how Minnesota became a hub for Hmong people. Hmong people are the largest Asian group in Minnesota, decades after many sought refuge here. The Hmong - who’d allied with US military during their secret war in Laos - faced brutal treatment after the war. Consequently, more than half of the Hmong people left Laos, led by General Vang Pao. They received refugee status for their sacrifices, resettling from temporary camps in Thailand to cities scattered across the USA. Today, there are around 370,000 Hmong Americans.
