UL FSRI is conducting a study to examine how ventilation impacts fire damage and the resulting fire patterns in structures representing single family homes. Knowledge of fire dynamics is critical for fire investigators to identify a fire’s area of origin and determine a cause; and fire dynamics are dependent upon understanding the role of ventilation during a fire event. This video provides an introduction to the types of measurements and experiments that were conducted. Reports and the online t

Today’s #TacticalTuesday video featuring UL FSRI’s Dan Madrzykowski explains what “pushing fire” really means. It has been taught that all hose streams can push fire. That is not accurate. Pressure is needed to create the push; therefore, it is stream choice and nozzle movement that impact whether or not fire can be pushed. Additionally, there must be a flow path and oxygen available downstream of the fire in order to push fire. Effective cooling of the fire compartment always reduces the potent

This week the UL FSRI team is working alongside Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services in conducting the multi-family structure phase of the DHS/FEMA Coordinated Fire Attack Study. The video below shows a coordinated attack on a bedroom fire in a ground floor apartment. The ventilation of the bedroom window was coordinated with the attack crew’s entry to the apartment. See https://ulfirefightersafety.org/research-projects/coordinated-fire-attack-utilizing-acquired-structures.html for additional p

Today’s #tacticaltuesday video featuring UL FSRI’s Keith Stakes explains the identification of structural stability, one of the limitations of thermal imaging cameras: Thermal imaging cameras are an important piece of technology used by firefighters to assist in search and rescue operations and also allow the ability to locate and monitor fire behavior within the structure. Like with any technology, thermal imagers have their own limitations. To be most effective, firefighters must equally aware

UL FSRI has released a NEW Fire Attack Full-Scale Online Course The decision of where to apply water may be one of the most important initial decisions during a structure fire. Whether your crew chooses to apply water as part of an interior attack or transitional attack, it is important to know the how the hose stream will impact the fire environment ahead. When you are behind the nozzle, visibility can be limited and understanding this impact can be difficult. Access the course here: http://s.u

UL-FRSI Tactical Consideration #6: Fire flows from high pressure to low pressure In a compartment, the fire acts like a pump. As the fire burns, hot fire gases (high pressure) collect at the ceiling and move toward low pressure, creating a flow path of heated fire gases to the outside. Outside air (carrying oxygen) is drawn into the base of the fire through openings in the building (doors, windows, roof). The “Understanding and Fighting Basement Fires” report is now available online at http://s.ul.com/2GDGtD6. The International Society of Fire Service Instructors and UL FSRI have conducted this research to better understand why basement fires present such a high risk to firefighters and what they can do to avoid injury. This study goes beyond past research by increasing the size of the basement, and incorporating three different access conditions to the basement. This project is supported with a

UL-FSRI Tactical Consideration #8: Keep the wind at your back When entering a structure or initiating fire attack, knowing the wind direction is a critical fireground factor.
