Alternator won?t charge unless exciter wire is jumped

#bushfix! Rock bounced off my shin and wiped out the exciter wire from the stator...in a very remote spot. I've never had this happen. Never heard of it happening. All I knew is the bike died like the killswitch was on. Troubleshooting took a while, testing backward from the spark plug with no spark. Once we started testing wires on the stator, we found the exciter circuit was open. Further testing with the solder joints on the stator showed all poles good so we looked at the wires. Sure enough,
